Find out more about team leadership

Is leadership ability something that people are born with?
There’s no doubt that some people feel more confident leading a team than others. You could say that some people have more ‘natural’ leadership ability than others. However, everyone can do it! It’s just a case of finding out what you need to do to get there. That's exactly what we do on our leadership courses. You’ll find out about your natural leadership style and work out what’s good about it – you’ll also find out the skills you’ll need to develop.

I’m quite a shy and quiet person and now have leadership responsibility – can you help?
Yes, definitely. Don’t worry though - You don’t have to change your whole personality to become an effective leader. You will however need to come out of yourself and be more assertive on occasions. We’ll help you with this – we’ll give you chances to try out different techniques so that by the end of the course you’ll feel more confident in your abilities as a leader. We won’t be suggesting that you start shouting though – good leadership is much more subtle than that.

Some people think I’m too autocratic – I thought that was what leadership was all about?
There’s a difference between being decisive and being autocratic. Autocratic leaders tend not to consider the viewpoint of team members when making decisions. Good leaders are decisive but listen to team members’ ideas and concerns when taking decisions. Good leaders also have the moral courage to stick to their decision if they still feel it’s right having considered the input of others.

Is delegation really as important as people say it is for a leader?
Knowing how to delegate is important. However, knowing how to do it is only half the story; good leaders accept that delegation is an essential element of leadership. Some people really struggle to accept this because they find it difficult to let go. There are many reasons why people fall into this trap and we cover them all on the Leadership skills course. You’ll also have a chance on the course to consider some real tasks that you can start to delegate when you get back to work. In essence, you’ll feel much more comfortable about the art of delegation.

I find that I get involved too much in the detailed tasks of my team members – do you cover this type of situation?
Yes. Leadership is about stepping back a bit. It’s difficult to do this when you’re not used to it because, particularly at the start, you’re never completely satisfied that the job is being done properly. You therefore want to keep checking. Try not to do this. Try to demonstrate trust in your team members. They’ll appreciate this and work harder for you. Don’t step back too far though and take your finger off the pulse. Maintain a helicopter view over events and intervene or assist when you think it will help, not just to satisfy your curiosity.

What level of experience and seniority do your Team Leadership courses target?
We work with team leaders of all seniorities and experience. We tailor the course to accommodate the needs of the target group. Some groups are junior managers who are completely new to Team Leadership, others have had Team Leadership responsibilities for some time and are looking to consolidate or perhaps refresh their skills.

Do your Team Leadership courses focus only on the ‘Leader’ or do they involve the team too?
Our Team Leadership courses focus mainly on Team Leadership skills which are relevant to team leaders. However, we do on occasions work with the team leader and their team together. This is normally when the team leader is struggling with motivating, leading or communicating with their team. Sometimes, we recommend a team development course to deal with these issues.

Do your Team Leadership courses help team leaders who have an actual team experiencing problems?
If a team leader has a specific issue to deal with, then we would recommend a tailored course involving the team too which is dedicated to solving this issue. Alternatively, our tailored Team Leadership courses incorporate facilitated discussions about problem issues that may affect the dynamics of the team.

Do you run Team Leadership courses for managers who are forming new teams?
We develop and run Team Leadership courses for managers who are in the process of forming a new team. The course could be focused on managers who are new to Team Leadership or those who already have some experience.

Are your Team Leadership courses relevant for team leaders whose teams don’t have any problems as such but could work better together?
Team leaders don’t have to have a problem team to benefit from a Team Leadership course. Even good teams can work better together, there's always something that can improve. In fact, we find that our Team Leadership courses are a great chance for team leaders to talk openly and explore new opportunities.

Do your Team Leadership courses address creativity and innovation within the team?
Team leaders are introduced to new ways of encouraging creativity and innovation amongst team members. Team leaders will also learn innovative methods to generate and implement creative ideas.

Do your Team Leadership courses help team leaders whose teams are going through change?

Some of our courses are tailored to address issues relating to changes in either working practices or personnel within the team. We tailor every course to suit the requirements of the target group.
